Serra Sphinx is fantastic! It was the seed card for my latest cube project in which I’m making an accessible “core set” to draft with my less experienced friends. Still not sure if I also wanna put Serra Angel in there.

Even to this day, it remains a huge powerhouse in Limited, though. Being able to flexibly shut down the opponent's best attacker or blocker (and double up when appropriate) and fit into any deck makes it an easy first pick in most instances where there isn't a rare megabomb in the pack.

It’s really interesting all the different lenses that you can view magic history through. This reminds me of the deep dives into the tribal decks over magics history.

Back in the day Force of Will was an awesome skill testing cards. Opponents would look to multi-spell in one turn, baiting out your counters with weak spells in hopes of landing their big one once you were tapped out. Force of Will could then step in counter their "important" spell.

The reason Icy Manipulator (and Twiddle) was not reprinted in Revised was not because of power, but because in Beta, Wizards added the clarification text to Icy that said: "No effects are generated by target card." This was meant to clarify that, for example, if I tapped one of your lands with Icy, it did not produce a mana (mana burn was a thing back then). Players found the added text confusing. Wizards felt it would be even more confusing to un-alter the card and decided to remove it for 3rd Edition. They changed their mind and reprinted Twiddle in 4th and Icy in Ice Age with the original wording. This was discussed in Duelist magazine, issue #3 or 4, iirc.

Was surprised to not see Environmental Sciences. It's been more useful than Expanded Anatomy from my memories of the set, and it has been taken higher, but apparently has 6% lower winrate-in-hand. Yea it was good, but wouldn't've guessed, huh. Do note though that Lessons probably have inflated winrate-in-hand stat, because you almost never have them in hand when they're bad. This is a case where I wish 17lands had "win rate when taken" stat, because Lessons also suck when you have to maindeck them, so that stat is useless.

Arbor Elf is interesting if you run Auras like Wild Growth and Utopia Sprawl.

A side note about bolt is that while it may not have ever been banned in most formats, they don’t print it in standard sets anymore, so that says something. It’s kinda like a pseudo-ban for standard

Toll of the Invasion is very surprising. I thought it was a solid card but not a top common.

Huh. Was really expecting the 1 mana toxic 1 creature that created a mite with toxic 1 on death.

My favorite two keyword abilities together have to be double strike and trample. "Let's meet in combat!!!"

Academy journeymage is surprising mly high in this list because the effect is well known and always good but not generaly not the best

Lackey is broken bc it doesn't say COMBAT damage. So if you give it ping, free goblin!!!

Back then, you also used to mess with your opponent's mind, bc if they played multi colored, you could make them guess which land you were going to tap. They might respond by tapping a land before you made your choice and if they couldn't use that mana, take one due to mana burn, which I know doesn't exist anymore. But fun little tricks.

Im all for inclusivity. But do you know why baby blue and baby pink were deliberately chosen for that flag? Maybe you should look into it and use the traditional LGBTQ flag colors instead

For the record: as somebody who played against this deck pre and post errata - allow me to dispell any silly notions about Icy falling off a cliff after the errata. *it did not see nearly as much competitive play because it now took more than 3 brain cells to pilot, but it wasnt bad at all. It definitely fell off for 4-5 years, but as soon as cards like Garruk Wildspeaker, Jace the Mind Sculptor and the ravnica bounce lands came out - all of a sudden Icy manip decks were strong again. Humor me. Get yourself a G/U icy manip deck shell. Include Garruk, Ravnica simic lands, and something that can tap an icy manipulator at the end phase of your opponents turn - and suddenly the only one being manipulated is your opponent. Pygmy hippo STILL works great in the deck in 2024. Play icy a turn they tap out and you cruise to a win

The Jounreymage would be more interesting if it could bounce your creatures as welll. Especially in a wizard deck. I wonder why they added restriction, would not be broken common otherwise, I think
